Foreword
Dear reader,
“Study the past if you would define the future.” With this
insight from the Chinese philosopher Confucius, I would like
to warmly invite you to the St. Veit Museum. The museum
tells the story of our town in a lively and colourful way, thus
creating a bridge to our present and future. Our museum is
the memory of St. Veit, a memory we can tap into at any
time. A place where our knowledge is stored and passed on; which presents to
us in a graphic way how we were, and who and what we are.
A visit to the museum depicting the history of our town is on the programme
for many families when guests come from further afield. We can thank the
people who work in and for the museum, and their first-rate work, for this
power of attraction, and of course especially the Director, Josef Kejzar!
Our town looks back over a history filled with changes. It has been – and still is
– stamped by the events and developments of our region and our province,
but also exhibits characteristics that are typical of it as a town. The people in
St. Veit an der Glan have undergone wars and destruction, famines and
epidemics, but also reconstruction and prosperity, they have celebrated with
glittering festivals and provided important cultural and technical services.
The exhibits on display in the museum tell of these major events and of the
everyday life of the people who have lived here, their sorrows and suffering,
their hopes and their private happiness. Little people may well often remain
unknown, but they write history too, not just the great ones, the rulers or
military leaders, discoverers and inventors whose names everyone still knows
centuries later.
I wish our museum continued great popularity and our visitors stimulating
encounters with the interesting history of St. Veit!
